As
founder and head of the art program at the Kent Campus of Florida
State College at Jacksonville, Anne Banas helped thousands of students
find their artistic heart and learn to express it.
Her paintings
and other pieces of art are displayed in galleries, corporate and
government facilities from California to New York, but her most
publically-recognizable pieces have always been her large public
murals. She completed several in Jacksonville Florida since moving
to the city in 1989, including the city's most-loved local landmark
of all, "Cat House Jacksonville."
Perhaps Anne's
most internationally-recognized piece of public art was also America's
largest hand-painted mural: the landmark "First
Team". This huge mural rose more than 150 feet over downtown
Jacksonville (a feat in itself for Anne, who had to overcome her
fear of heights to climb the 14 levels of scaffolding each day!).
It depicted five of the original Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team,
along with the team's original coach. The mural was a natural city
landmark, shot from the Goodyear Blimp and nationally-televised
during every home game from its completion in the summer of 1998
until it was painted over in September 2006. A very limited number
of signed & numbered collector's prints of this mural are still
available.

The
Largest Hand-Painted Mural in America is only one of hundreds of
works by artist Anne Banas. |
Now retired, Anne
continues to paint (smaller pieces!) for private collections, using the
inspiration of the constantly changing sky and sea around her in Florida.
Many of these are viewable on this site in her "Virtual
Gallery Tour." Prior to arriving in Jacksonville Anne served
as head of art for Eastern New Mexico University, Roswell Campus. Anne
is a second-generation southern Californian. She and her husband, marketing
and business growth consultant Emerson Brantley, have three grown
daughters. A & E are always looking for ways to run away together!
